1 House Resolution
2 A resolution honoring the Florida American
3 Association of University Women on its 70th
4 Anniversary.

6 WHEREAS, the Florida American Association of University
7 Women was founded on March 30, 1929, at the home of Dr. Helen
8 Cole in Winter Park, Florida, and
9 WHEREAS, at the time of its founding, there were nine
10 active branches of the association with about 300 members, and
11 WHEREAS, today there are 56 branches with over 5,500
12 members in communities throughout Florida from Key West to
13 Pensacola, and
14 WHEREAS, the American Association of University Women
15 promotes equity for all women and girls, life-long education,
16 and positive societal change, and
17 WHEREAS, the American Association of University Women
18 Educational Foundation provides funds to advance education,
19 research, and self-development for women and to foster equity
20 and positive societal change, and
21 WHEREAS, the American Association of University Women's
22 Legal Advocacy Fund provides funding and a support system for
23 women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination, and
24 WHEREAS, the American Association of University Women
25 values and seeks a diverse membership, and
26 WHEREAS, over the course of its 70-year existence, the
27 Florida American Association of University Women has sponsored
28 a number of projects statewide, and
29 WHEREAS, in 1931, the association conducted a study of
30 schools in Florida in conjunction with the Florida Education
31 Association, and

1 WHEREAS, in 1940-1941 the association conducted a
2 project entitled "The Status of Women in Florida," and
3 WHEREAS, during the 1950's, the association held art
4 contests for students in grades 10 through 12, and
5 subsequently published the booklet "The Art Resources in the
6 State of Florida," and
7 WHEREAS, during the 1970's the association developed
8 and published "Life is Real," a model to be used by senior
9 citizens in coping with the problems of aging, and
10 WHEREAS, in the 1980's the Florida American Association
11 of University Women focused on women's equity activities, and
12 WHEREAS, during the 1990's the association organized
13 and sponsored "Sister-to-Sister Summits," gatherings for girls
14 of middle school age, planned for and by the girls
15 participating in the summits, and covering a wide variety of
16 topics such as self-image issues, school violence, sexual
17 harassment, and educational needs, and
18 WHEREAS, as the millennium approaches, the Florida
19 American Association of University Women continues to be a
20 strong voice for women and girls in the areas of education,
21 health, and equity, and looks forward with energy and
22 enthusiasm to the next 70 years as it continues to work to
23 fulfill its mission, and
24 WHEREAS, it is fitting and appropriate that the Florida
25 House of Representatives honor the Florida American
26 Association of University Women, NOW, THEREFORE,

28 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

1 That the House of Representatives of the State of
2 Florida hereby honors the Florida American Association of
3 University Women for seven decades of diligent effort at
4 promoting equity for all women and girls, life-long education,
5 and positive societal change, on the occasion of its 70th
6 Anniversary.
7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution
8 be transmitted to the Florida American Association of
9 University Women, as a tangible token of the sentiments
10 expressed herein.
