  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution commending the Florida Commission

  3         on Human Relations for contributions to this

  4         state.

  5

  6         WHEREAS, the 1969 Florida Legislature enacted the Human

  7  Rights Act, which established the Florida Commission on Human

  8  Relations for the purpose of enforcing Florida's

  9  antidiscrimination laws, and

10         WHEREAS, state and federal laws have expanded the

11  jurisdiction of the commission to prohibit discrimination in

12  housing, employment, public lodging, food service

13  establishments, and private clubs because of race, color,

14  religion, sex, handicap, national origin, and marital status,

15  and

16         WHEREAS, in the area of housing, discrimination based

17  on familial status is prohibited, and

18         WHEREAS, thirty years of progress have now been

19  achieved by the Florida Commission on Human Relations and are

20  being celebrated in 1999 with a 30th Anniversary Jubilee, and

21         WHEREAS, the commission's mission is to promote and

22  encourage fair treatment of and equal access to opportunities

23  for all citizens of Florida and to promote mutual

24  understanding and respect among all Floridians by reducing

25  intolerance, antagonism, and intergroup tension through

26  education, legislation, and enhancement of public awareness,

27  and

28         WHEREAS, as we approach the new millennium, more

29  citizens share neighborhoods, work, school, and social

30  relationships across racial and cultural lines than ever

31  before, and

  1         WHEREAS, despite our progress, prejudice persists, and

  2         WHEREAS, the commission, as an advocate of human

  3  rights, will continue to unite with advocates throughout our

  4  state to rededicate itself to the spirit of freedom, justice,

  5  and equality that initiated the passage of the legislation

  6  that established it thirty years ago, NOW, THEREFORE,

  7

  8  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  9  Florida:

11         That the House of Representatives pauses in its

12  deliberations to honor the Florida Commission on Human

13  Relations as the commission celebrates three historic decades

14  of moving this state ever closer to the goal of "One Florida."
