1 House Resolution
2 A resolution in recognition of the Reverend
3 John A. Ferguson.

5 WHEREAS, in 1964, the Reverend John A. Ferguson became
6 the founding pastor of the Second Baptist Church of Richmond
7 Heights, Florida, and for the past 34 years has fully
8 dedicated himself to the church and the community which it
9 serves, and
10 WHEREAS, born July 23, 1923, John A. Ferguson served
11 for 21 years in the United States Navy before entering the
12 ministry in 1959, and
13 WHEREAS, growth in southern Dade County has been
14 phenomenal and Reverend Ferguson has worked diligently to
15 smooth the transition of the area into a contemporary urban
16 center and, in addition to leading his growing community of
17 parishioners, has helped unite the multicultural population of
18 the county by serving on the Community Relations Board of
19 Metropolitan Dade County, and
20 WHEREAS, for the past 14 years, Reverend Ferguson has
21 served effectively as an advocate and manager on the county's
22 School Desegregation Committee and presently serves on the
23 Health and Human Services Board, where he is a strong voice
24 for the equitable distribution of social services to the poor
25 and disadvantaged in the community, and
26 WHEREAS, Reverend Ferguson, a member of the Dade County
27 Public Schools Blue Ribbon Committee and the Metro Miami
28 Action Plan Membership Selection Committee, was a strong force
29 in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew, organizing the religious
30 leaders of the area in an effort to rebuild and to improve the
31 quality of life in the wake of the hurricane, and

1 WHEREAS, Reverend Ferguson also played a central role
2 in the creation of the Richmond Heights Optimist Club to offer
3 more appropriate recreational opportunities for area youth,
4 and
5 WHEREAS, recognized throughout Dade County as a strong
6 advocate for equity for all people and a great believer in the
7 intrinsic value of human life, Reverend Ferguson is credited
8 with playing a large role in building bridges between the many
9 ethnic populations in Dade County and opening effective
10 channels of communication between peoples of different
11 backgrounds, and
12 WHEREAS, Reverend John A. Ferguson is a natural leader
13 who is able to effectively reach and unite the public and
14 private sectors, enabling them to work toward mutually
15 beneficial goals, and
16 WHEREAS, it is fitting and appropriate that the Florida
17 House of Representatives recognize the Reverend John A.
18 Ferguson for more than three decades of service to the
19 citizens of the South Dade County area, NOW, THEREFORE,
20
21 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
22 Florida:

24 That the House of Representatives of the State of
25 Florida hereby recognizes and commends the Reverend John A.
26 Ferguson for his efforts toward the betterment of the lives of
27 the citizens of the South Dade County area.
28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution
29 be transmitted to the Reverend John A. Ferguson as a tangible
30 token of the sentiments expressed herein.
