1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to the Board of Dentistry;
3 amending s. 466.004, F.S.; revising the
4 qualifications of members of the board;
5 providing an effective date.

7 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

9 Section 1. Subsection (1) of section 466.004, Florida
10 Statutes, is amended to read:
11 466.004 Board of Dentistry.--
12 (1) To carry out the provisions of this chapter, there
13 is created within the department the Board of Dentistry
14 consisting of 11 members who shall be appointed by the
15 Governor and subject to confirmation by the Senate. Seven
16 members of the board must be licensed dentists actively
17 engaged in the clinical practice of dentistry in this state
18 whose principal source of income is derived from direct
19 patient care; two members must be licensed dental hygienists
20 actively engaged in the practice of dental hygiene in this
21 state; and the remaining two members must be laypersons who
22 are not, and have never been, dentists, dental hygienists, or
23 members of any closely related profession or occupation. Each
24 member of the board who is a licensed dentist must have been
25 actively engaged in the practice of dentistry primarily as a
26 clinical practitioner for at least 5 years immediately
27 preceding the date of her or his appointment to the board and
28 must remain primarily in clinical practice during all
29 subsequent periods of appointment to the board. Any person who
30 is connected in any way with any dental college or community
31 college may be appointed to the board so long as that person

1 complies with s. 455.531 that connection does not result in a
2 relationship wherein such college provides more than 5 percent
3 of the person's income. At least one member of the board must
4 be 60 years of age or older. Members shall be appointed for
5 4-year terms.
6 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2000.

9 SENATE SUMMARY
10 Deletes a requirement that dentist members of the Board
of Dentistry derive their principal source of income from
11 patient care. Also deletes a requirement that board
members connected with a dental college or community
12 college receive no more than 5 percent of their income
from that college.
