  2         An act relating to rest areas; directing the

  3         Department of Transportation to fly the POW-MIA

  4         flag and erect appropriate markers honoring

  5         POW's and MIA's; providing an effective date.

  6

  7         WHEREAS, history has been shaped by the brave men and

  8  women in the United States Armed Forces who answered the call

  9  to America's highest duty, and

10         WHEREAS, while we honor our veterans for their

11  strength, service, and sacrifice, it is equally important to

12  remember those who are missing in action and remain

13  unaccounted for, and

14         WHEREAS, there are still thousands of American military

15  personnel whose whereabouts remain unknown, and

16         WHEREAS, families of these courageous patriots deserve

17  to know that this state has not forgotten their outstanding

18  contributions, and

19         WHEREAS, each year, people in this state and across the

20  country join together in remembrance of these missing

21  individuals and to reaffirm our commitment to account for all

22  our POW's and MIA's, NOW, THEREFORE,

23

24  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

25

26         Section 1.  The Florida Department of Transportation

27  shall fly the POW-MIA flag year round at each of the rest

28  areas along interstate highways in this state.

29         Section 2.  The Department of Transportation, in

30  cooperation with the Department of Veterans' Affairs, shall

31  display an appropriate marker or plaque at each rest area

  1  along interstate highways in this state recognizing the

  2  sacrifices of those servicemen and servicewomen still

  3  unaccounted for, and acknowledging the sacrifices of their

  4  families.

  5         Section 3.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

  6  law.
