  1                    Senate Resolution No.     

  2         A resolution recognizing October as Breast

  3         Cancer Awareness Month.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, breast cancer is the leading type of cancer

  6  among women in Florida and is the second highest cause of

  7  cancer deaths among the state's female population, and

  8         WHEREAS, of the 182,800 women in the United States that

  9  were projected to be diagnosed with breast cancer during 2000,

10  12,000 were expected to be residents of Florida, and

11         WHEREAS, of the women in Florida who in 1998 learned

12  that they had breast cancer, 2,700 were expected to die in

13  2000, and

14         WHEREAS, the National Association of Breast Cancer

15  Organizations has designated October as Breast Cancer

16  Awareness Month across the nation, NOW, THEREFORE,

17

18  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

19

20         That the Florida Senate recognizes the month of October

21  as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Florida and urges all

22  women to understand the risks associated with breast cancer,

23  to take preventive steps to minimize those risks, and to

24  undergo early detection procedures such as mammography.
