  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to trapping animals; amending

  3         s. 828.12, F.S.; subjecting trappers to ch.

  4         828, F.S.; providing standards for the care of

  5         trapped animals; providing an effective date.

  7  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

  8

  9         Section 1.  Subsection (5) is added to section 828.12,

10  Florida Statutes, to read:

11         828.12  Cruelty to animals.--

12         (5)  Any person who engages in trapping an animal is

13  subject to the provisions of this chapter. Animal traps must

14  be visually checked at least every 24 hours. Trapped animals

15  must be supplied with necessary food, water, medical care, and

16  adequate shelter from natural elements or man-made conditions,

17  and must be released, relocated, or if they are to be killed,

18  humanely euthanized within 48 hours after capture. In

19  relocating animals, mother animals must not be separated from

20  their dependent offspring, if possible.

21         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2000.

25    Subjects animal trappers to ch. 828, F.S. Provides that
      traps must be checked every 24 hours. Provides that
26    trapped animals must be given certain care and released,
      relocated, or euthanized within 48 hours after capture.

      offspring, if possible.
