  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to the Board of Regents;

  3         repealing s. 240.207, F.S.; abolishing the

  4         board; requiring the board to submit a report;

  5         requiring interim studies by the Legislature;

  6         providing an effective date.

  8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

  9

10         Section 1.  Section 240.207, Florida Statutes, is

11  repealed on July 1, 2002, and the Board of Regents is

12  abolished.

13         Section 2.  Before the 2001 Regular Session of the

14  Legislature, the Board of Regents shall submit to the

15  Legislature a report that justifies the continued existence of

16  the board and its retention of its powers and

17  responsibilities.

18         Section 3.  The President of the Senate and the Speaker

19  of the House of Representatives shall direct the staffs of the

20  appropriate committee or committees of their respective houses

21  to study during the interim preceding the 2001 Regular Session

22  the issues of whether the Board of Regents should be abolished

23  and the feasibility of transferring responsibilities presently

24  exercised by the board to the boards of trustees of the

25  individual universities in the State University System.

26         Section 4.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

27  law.

  2                          SENATE SUMMARY

  3    Abolishes the Board of Regents July 1, 2001. Before that
      date, the board must submit a report to the Legislature
  4    justifying its continuation, and legislative committees
      must study the issue of the board's abolition and the
  5    feasibility of distributing its responsibilities to the
      boards of trustees of the various universities.
