1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to laptop computers for
3 students; creating a task force to study the
4 feasibility of providing a laptop computer for
5 every public school student in kindergarten
6 through grade 12; establishing membership of
7 the task force; providing duties of the task
8 force; requiring a report; providing an
9 effective date.

11 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

13 Section 1. There is established a task force to study
14 the feasibility of providing a laptop computer for every
15 public school student in kindergarten through grade 12.
16 (1) The task force shall be composed of the following
17 members:
18 (a) Two members-at-large, appointed by the Governor.
19 (b) Two members-at-large, appointed by the President
20 of the Senate.
21 (c) Two members-at-large, appointed by the Speaker of
22 the House of Representatives.
23 (d) Three members who represent district school
24 boards, appointed by the Governor.
25 (e) Three members who represent district school
26 boards, appointed by the Commissioner of Education.
27 (f) Two members who are involved in the computer-based
28 technology industry, appointed by the Governor.
29 (g) Two members with knowledge and experience in the
30 area of finance or accounting, appointed by the Governor.
31 (2) The task force shall:

1 (a) Determine the cost of providing a laptop computer
2 for every public school student in kindergarten through grade
3 12.
4 (b) Create a plan to provide a laptop computer for
5 every public school student in kindergarten through grade 12
6 over a 3-year period, beginning with students in Dade and
7 Broward Counties.
8 (3) The task force shall report the results of the
9 study to the Legislature, the Governor, and the Commissioner
10 of Education no later than January 1, 2001.
11 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2000.
