  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to high school diplomas;

  3         amending s. 232.246, F.S.; providing for the

  4         award of a high school diploma to certain

  5         honorably discharged World War II veterans;

  6         providing an effective date.

  8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10         Section 1.  Subsection (11) is added to section

11  232.246, Florida Statutes, to read:

12         232.246  General requirements for high school

13  graduation.--

14         (11)  The Commissioner of Education may award an

15  honorary high school diploma to honorably discharged veterans

16  who started high school between 1937 and 1946 and were

17  scheduled to graduate between 1941 and 1950 but were inducted

18  into the United States Armed Forces between September 16,

19  1940, and December 31, 1946, prior to completing the necessary

20  high school graduation requirements. Upon the recommendation

21  of the commissioner, the State Board of Education may develop

22  criteria and guidelines for awarding such diplomas.

23         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2000.

27    Provides for the award of an honorary high school diploma
      to honorably discharged World War II veterans who joined
28    the United States Armed Forces prior to graduation from
      high school.
