  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to high school diplomas;

  3         amending s. 232.246, F.S.; providing for the

  4         award of a high school diploma to certain

  5         honorably discharged World War II veterans;

  6         providing an effective date.

  8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10         Section 1.  Subsection (11) is added to section

11  232.246, Florida Statutes, to read:

12         232.246  General requirements for high school

13  graduation.--

14         (11)  The Commissioner of Education may award a high

15  school diploma to honorably discharged veterans who started

16  high school between 1937 and 1946 and were scheduled to

17  graduate between 1941 and 1950 but were inducted into the

18  United States Armed Forces between September 16, 1940, and

19  December 31, 1946, prior to completing the necessary high

20  school graduation requirements. Upon the recommendation of the

21  commissioner, the State Board of Education may develop

22  criteria and guidelines for awarding such diplomas.

23         Section 2.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

24  law.

                       COMMITTEE SUBSTITUTE FOR

29  The committee substitute removes the word honorary before the
    words high school diploma.  It also deleted the effective date
30  of July 1, 2000 and makes the bill effective upon becoming
    law.
