  1                      A bill to be entitled
  2         An act relating to student athletes; requiring
  3         the State Board of Education to adopt by rule
  4         uniform procedures to be implemented when a
  5         student athlete is arrested for a crime;
  6         providing for such procedures to apply to the
  7         State University System, community colleges,
  8         and institutions that receive state funds;
  9         defining the term "student athlete"; requiring
10         that notice be provided to faculty and
11         students; providing an effective date.

13  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

15         Section 1.  (1)  The State Board of Education shall
16  adopt by rule uniform policies and procedures to be
17  implemented if a student athlete is arrested for a crime. The
18  uniform procedures shall apply to each institution in the
19  State University System, each state community college, and any
20  other institution of higher education that receives state
21  funds. The uniform policies and procedures must be included in
22  the institution's handbook, manual, or other similar document
23  regularly provided to faculty and students.
24         (2)  As used in this section, the term "student
25  athlete" means a student who participates in intercollegiate
26  athletics or who has informed the institution, in writing, of
27  the student's intent to participate in intercollegiate
28  athletics.
29         Section 2.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a
30  law.

  3    Requires that the State Board of Education adopt uniform
      procedures to be implemented when a student athlete is
  4    arrested for a crime. Defines the term "student athlete"
      to mean a student who participates, or who has expressed
  5    an intent in writing to participate, in intercollegiate
      athletics. Provides for the procedures to apply to the
  6    State University System, state community colleges, and
      other institutions that receive state funds. Requires
  7    that the uniform procedures be included in each
      institution's handbook or manual provided to faculty and
  8    students.
