2 A memorial to the Congress of the United
3 States, urging Congress to issue a
4 commemorative postage stamp honoring the United
5 States Submarine Force on its 100th
6 anniversary.

8 WHEREAS, in the year 2000, the United States Submarine
9 Force will celebrate a century of service to the nation, and
10 WHEREAS, little has captured our imagination more than
11 exploring the ocean depths, and
12 WHEREAS, submarine technology has proven invaluable to
13 our nation by strengthening our national defense, preserving
14 world maritime freedom, and producing scientific
15 breakthroughs, and
16 WHEREAS, submarines have not only provided a remarkable
17 strategic platform, but have helped establish a firm
18 foundation for scientific exploration, and
19 WHEREAS, the United States Submarine Force was
20 responsible for 55 percent of all Japanese shipping destroyed
21 during World War II even though submariners constituted only 2
22 percent of all United States Navy personnel serving in that
23 war, and
24 WHEREAS, 52 American submarines and over 3,500 American
25 submariners were lost during World War II, and
26 WHEREAS, in peacetime, the Silent Service continues to
27 patrol around the clock under the oceans to keep us free, and
28 WHEREAS, veterans of the United States Submarine Force
29 have served with honor and courage, risking their lives in
30 combat against determined foes and always against an
31 unforgiving sea, NOW, THEREFORE,

1 Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

3 That the United States Postal Service issue a
4 commemorative postage stamp in honor of the United States
5 Submarine Force on its 100th anniversary.
6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this memorial be
7 sent to the President of the United States, the President of
8 the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States
9 House of Representatives, and to each member of the Florida
10 delegation to the United States Congress.
