  1                    Senate Resolution No.     

  2         A resolution recognizing April 2000 as "Women

  3         and Depression Awareness Month."

  4

  5         WHEREAS, depression is one of the leading causes of

  6  disability in women, and

  7         WHEREAS, more than one in five women in Florida are

  8  afflicted with clinical depression each year, and

  9         WHEREAS, more than two-thirds of the women in Florida

10  fail to seek professional help for depression, and

11         WHEREAS, 80 percent of the women in Florida who seek

12  help for depression can be successfully treated, and

13         WHEREAS, the Florida OB-GYN Society in conjunction with

14  the Florida Section of the American College of OB-GYNs has

15  designated April 2000 as "Women and Depression Awareness

16  Month," NOW, THEREFORE,

18  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

19

20         That the Florida Senate recognizes April 2000 as "Women

21  and Depression Awareness Month" in Florida and urges all women

22  to recognize the risks associated with depression and to seek

23  medical help when symptoms are detected.

24         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all health care providers

25  who are responsible for primary care of women learn to

26  recognize the early signs of depression, incorporate

27  depression-screening tools in their practice, and treat or

28  refer their patients as appropriate.
