1 Senate Resolution No.
2 A resolution honoring Herbert D. Carrington,
3 Sr., the longtime host of the Tampa Yacht Club,
4 who will celebrate his 102nd birthday this
5 year.

7 WHEREAS, Herbert D. Carrington, Sr., is known for
8 kindness and diligence that have endeared him to generations
9 of pioneer Tampa families while working at the Tampa Yacht
10 Club, and
11 WHEREAS, Mr. Carrington counts car dealer Jim Ferman
12 and baseball team owner George Steinbrenner among his many
13 friends who honored him at his 100th birthday party at the
14 yacht club 2 years ago, and
15 WHEREAS, Herbert lost his father to a heart attack and
16 his mother to typhoid fever when he was 13 years old, and, at
17 age 14, set out on his own to pick cotton, do odd jobs, and
18 work for the Railway Express, and
19 WHEREAS, he found his way to Tampa in the 1920s, helped
20 build the Gandy Bridge, and worked as a chauffeur and butler
21 for the Washington and Dupree families, before joining the
22 yacht club staff in the early 1940s, and
23 WHEREAS, he married Mae Alice Warren in 1936 and
24 started a family that includes sons Herbert, Jr., who teaches
25 at Haven Poe Runaway Center, and Roland, who is assistant
26 director of human resources at the University of South
27 Florida, and stepdaughter Martha Cabrera and stepson Marion,
28 and
29 WHEREAS, Mr. Carrington's grandchildren include Warren,
30 coach and teacher at Dixie Hollins High School in St.
31 Petersburg; U.S. Army Captain Cedric, assigned to a Brigadier

1 General at Fort Meade; Herbert III, who works in retail;
2 Lucreta, compensation manager for W.H. Smith International;
3 educators Sandra, Harcourt, Theron, and Yolanda; and Jennifer,
4 a criminal justice worker in Dade County, and
5 WHEREAS, Mr. Carrington still shows up for special
6 occasions at the yacht club, putting on his tuxedo and
7 greeting members at the door, and
8 WHEREAS, Mr. Carrington has purchased all his cars, at
9 least 15, from one of Jim Ferman's dealerships and is proud to
10 hold the distinctive title of "Ferman's oldest customer," NOW,
11 THEREFORE,

13 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

15 That the Florida Senate honors the life of Herbert D.
16 Carrington, Sr., who will celebrate his 102nd birthday in the
17 year 2000.
18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
19 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Herbert
20 D. Carrington, Sr., as a tangible token of the sentiments and
21 good wishes of the Florida Senate.
