  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to building designations;

  3         designating the State Veterans' Nursing Home in

  4         Pembroke Pines as the Alexander "Sandy"

  5         Nininger, Jr. State Veterans' Nursing Home;

  6         directing the Department of Veterans' Affairs

  7         to erect suitable markers; providing an

  8         effective date.

10         WHEREAS, Alexander "Sandy" Nininger, Jr., a graduate of

11  Ft. Lauderdale High School and the United States Military

12  Academy, served as a First Lieutenant in the United States

13  Army, and

14         WHEREAS, Alexander "Sandy" Nininger, Jr., was serving

15  with Company K, 57th Infantry, Philippine Scouts, when he

16  engaged enemy forces near Abucay, Bataan, Philippine Islands

17  on January 12, 1942, and

18         WHEREAS, Alexander "Sandy" Nininger, Jr., repeatedly

19  forced his way into hostile positions and engaged in

20  hand-to-hand combat with an enemy force having superior

21  firepower, and

22         WHEREAS, Alexander "Sandy" Nininger, Jr., despite being

23  wounded three times, continued his attacks, pushing alone far

24  behind enemy lines, and

25         WHEREAS, Alexander "Sandy" Nininger, Jr.'s bravery and

26  heroic actions resulted in his death at the hands of the

27  enemy, and

28         WHEREAS, Alexander "Sandy" Nininger, Jr., was awarded

29  the Congressional Medal of Honor on February 10, 1942, for

30  exceptional courage, fortitude, and devotion to duty, NOW,

31  THEREFORE,

  1  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

  2

  3         Section 1.  The State Veterans' Home in Pembroke Pines

  4  is designated the Alexander "Sandy" Nininger, Jr., State

  5  Veterans' Nursing Home.

  6         Section 2.  The Department of Veterans' Affairs is

  7  directed to erect suitable markers bearing the designation

  8  made by this act.

  9         Section 3.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2000.
