  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to building designations;

  3         designating the State Veterans' Nursing Home in

  4         Pembroke Pines as the Alexander "Sandy"

  5         Nininger, Jr. State Veterans' Nursing Home;

  6         designating the Science and Education Building

  7         at the Southeast Campus of Florida Atlantic

  8         University in Davie as the "Senator James A.

  9         Scott Building"; directing the Department of

10         Veterans' Affairs to erect suitable markers;

11         designating a school in Washington County the

12         "Colly V Williams Middle/High School";

13         providing an effective date.

15         WHEREAS, Alexander "Sandy" Nininger, Jr., a graduate of

16  Ft. Lauderdale High School and the United States Military

17  Academy, served as a First Lieutenant in the United States

18  Army, and

19         WHEREAS, Alexander "Sandy" Nininger, Jr., was serving

20  with Company K, 57th Infantry, Philippine Scouts, when he

21  engaged enemy forces near Abucay, Bataan, Philippine Islands

22  on January 12, 1942, and

23         WHEREAS, Alexander "Sandy" Nininger, Jr., repeatedly

24  forced his way into hostile positions and engaged in

25  hand-to-hand combat with an enemy force having superior

26  firepower, and

27         WHEREAS, Alexander "Sandy" Nininger, Jr., despite being

28  wounded three times, continued his attacks, pushing alone far

29  behind enemy lines, and

  1         WHEREAS, Alexander "Sandy" Nininger, Jr.'s bravery and

  2  heroic actions resulted in his death at the hands of the

  3  enemy, and

  4         WHEREAS, Alexander "Sandy" Nininger, Jr., was awarded

  5  the Congressional Medal of Honor on February 10, 1942, for

  6  exceptional courage, fortitude, and devotion to duty, NOW,

  7  THEREFORE,

  9  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10

11         Section 1.  The State Veterans' Home in Pembroke Pines

12  is designated the Alexander "Sandy" Nininger, Jr., State

13  Veterans' Nursing Home.

14         Section 2.  The Science and Education Building at the

15  Southeast Campus of Florida Atlantic University in Davie is

16  designated the "Senator James A. Scott Building."

17         Section 3.  The Department of Veterans' Affairs is

18  directed to erect suitable markers bearing the designation

19  made by this act.

20         Section 4.  The new Middle/High School in Washington

21  County is designated as the "Colly V Williams Middle/High

22  School."

23         Section 5.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2000.
