  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution honoring the Florida cattle

  3         industry.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, cattle have been raised for food and profit in

  6  Florida since the Spanish settlements of the 1500's, and

  7         WHEREAS, Florida is presently ranked third of all

  8  states east of Mississippi and twelfth in the nation in beef

  9  cattle produced, with over 1.1 million head in the year 2000,

10  and

11         WHEREAS, the Florida cattle industry annually ships

12  over 750,000 calves to 23 states and is a major supplier for

13  the nation's beef production, and

14         WHEREAS, over 7 million acres of Florida land are in

15  production for cattle grazing, supplying habitat for wildlife

16  and providing vital water recharge areas, and

17         WHEREAS, Florida ranches have received national

18  recognition for exhibiting excellence in environmental

19  practices, including resource protection and preservation

20  practices which protect habitat and allow threatened and

21  endangered wildlife to thrive and prosper, and

22         WHEREAS, the Florida cattle industry has been

23  represented by the Florida Cattlemen's Association since 1934

24  and today is composed of approximately 5,000 member families,

25  NOW, THEREFORE,

27  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

28  Florida:

30         That the Florida House of Representatives declares

31  March 15, 2000, as "Beef Day on the Hill," and honors and

  1  applauds the rare men, women, and children of the Florida

  2  cattle industry for their efforts and determination and their

  3  commitment to our state, which has become an integral part of

  4  Florida's heritage.

  5         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

  6  be presented to the Florida Cattlemen's Association as a

  7  tangible token of our respect and appreciation for a job well

  8  done.
