  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution designating March 16, 2000,

  3         Florida Doctors' Day.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, first observed in 1933 by a group of

  6  physicians' wives in Winder, Georgia, Doctors' Day celebrates

  7  the tremendous compassion and talent of physicians and

  8  commemorates the first administration of anesthesia by a

  9  physician in 1842, and

10         WHEREAS, according to a 1998 Harris poll, Americans

11  regard doctors as the nation's most prestigious professional

12  group, and President George Bush held physicians in such high

13  regard that he designated an official day of recognition for

14  them in 1990, and

15         WHEREAS, the Florida Medical Association has sponsored

16  the "Doctor of the Day" program for many years, providing a

17  volunteer physician every day of the Regular Legislative

18  Session in both the House of Representatives of the State of

19  Florida and the Florida Senate to care for legislators, staff,

20  and others in the Capitol who require medical services, and

21         WHEREAS, volunteer physicians were recently commended

22  by the Florida Department of Health for their efforts to

23  provide medical care to the state's medically uninsured

24  residents, which amounted to more than $50 million in health

25  care goods and services in fiscal year 1998-1999, and

26         WHEREAS, Florida's physicians selflessly devote each

27  day of their lives to caring for the citizens of the State of

28  Florida and make unique and special contributions to our

29  society and to our culture, thanklessly enduring long and

30  unpredictable hours and coping with the highly conflicting

31  demands of work and family life, NOW, THEREFORE,

  1  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  2  Florida:

  4         That the House of Representatives of the State of

  5  Florida declares March 16, 2000, as Florida Doctors' Day in

  6  honor of the selfless service and immense talent of Florida's

  7  physicians.
