2 A resolution designating June 2000 as Prostate
3 Cancer Awareness Month.

5 WHEREAS, prostate cancer is the second leading cause of
6 cancer deaths among men, and
7 WHEREAS, in the United States, an estimated 180,400 men
8 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during 2000, and 13,700
9 of those men will be residents of Florida, and
10 WHEREAS, an estimated 31,900 men will die from prostate
11 cancer in the United States, and 2,400 of those men will be
12 residents of Florida, and
13 WHEREAS, nonwhite men in Florida are at a greater risk
14 of being diagnosed with prostate cancer than are white men,
15 and
16 WHEREAS, nonwhite men in Florida who are diagnosed with
17 prostate cancer are more than twice as likely to die from the
18 disease than are white men, and
19 WHEREAS, June is a month in which we salute the men of
20 the nation, highlighted by the celebration of Father's Day,
21 NOW, THEREFORE,

23 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
24 Florida:

26 That the House of Representatives of the State of
27 Florida recognizes June 2000 as Prostate Cancer Awareness
28 Month in Florida, and urges all men, particularly members of
29 high-risk populations, to become aware of the risks and
30 symptoms associated with prostate cancer and to be informed
