  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution commending Miami Children's

  3         Hospital for its 50 years of service.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, conceived in the hearts of local physicians in

  6  the mid-1930's and brought to fruition through the

  7  persistence, energy, and benevolence of the citizens of South

  8  Florida, Variety Children's Hospital opened its doors on March

  9  21, 1950, primarily as a regional hospital for young victims

10  of poliomyelitis, and in less than 10 years had become a

11  teaching hospital focusing on pediatrics, and

12         WHEREAS, over the next decades, the hospital continued

13  to expand its disciplines in a determined effort to provide

14  the ultimate in health care so that no child ever need leave

15  the state to receive the best care available for even the

16  worst of diseases, all the while ministering with the same

17  concerned, tender care that had become its single-most

18  defining characteristic, and

19         WHEREAS, in order to meet the needs of a burgeoning

20  population, the Miami Children's Hospital Foundation was

21  established as the fiduciary and fundraising affiliate of the

22  pediatric medical center, with David M. Walters, former

23  Ambassador to the Vatican, serving as its inspired and

24  inspiring president, and, in February 1983, Variety Children's

25  Hospital became Miami Children's Hospital, and

26         WHEREAS, with many "firsts" to its credit, such as the

27  first trachea transplant in the United States, the first

28  extracardiac Fontan operation in the world that did not

29  require cardiopulmonary bypass, and the first endoscopic

30  ventricular thrombectomy in the world, today, Miami Children's

31  Hospital excels in all aspects of pediatric medicine, caring

  1  for more than 185,000 pediatric patients annually from all

  2  over the world, and is the largest free-standing pediatric

  3  teaching hospital in the Southeastern United States and the

  4  only licensed specialty hospital in South Florida exclusively

  5  for children, and

  6         WHEREAS, Miami Children's Hospital presently enjoys a

  7  unique pediatric alliance with the University of Miami School

  8  of Medicine and Jackson Memorial Hospital, with a view toward

  9  working to achieve a prominence in pediatric health care that

10  will place Miami in the forefront of medical care for children

11  worldwide, NOW, THEREFORE,

13  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

14  Florida:

15

16         That the House of Representatives pauses in its

17  deliberations to congratulate Miami Children's Hospital as it

18  observes 50 years of excellent service to the community, the

19  nation, and the world, to commend it for the achievement of

20  its highly commendable aspirations, and to wish it

21  unparalleled success in its future endeavors.
