  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing Tuesday, April 11,

  3         2000, as "Stop Day" in Florida.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, violence in America's schools threatens the

  6  core of the educational process and deprives students and

  7  teachers of the opportunity to learn and teach without the

  8  constant presence of fear, and

  9         WHEREAS, "Stop Day" is intended to bring awareness to

10  and focus on the growing epidemic of student violence and to

11  offer students an opportunity for self-improvement by rallying

12  the cry against school-related crime, and

13         WHEREAS, students are encouraged to recite the "Stop

14  Day" pledge, which states. "I pledge to be nonviolent and to

15  respect my fellow classmates. I will report crime or acts of

16  violence to appropriate officials or call crime stoppers to

17  report incidents anonymously. I will not let the actions of a

18  few make my school dangerous or unsafe. I want a safe learning

19  environment and will work with my fellow students to make it

20  so!", and

21         WHEREAS, "Stop Day" participants are encouraged to show

22  their support by developing anti-violence community service

23  projects, inviting legal professionals to speak to student

24  groups, conducting open-ended skits which allow student

25  observers to predict the outcome based upon real life choices,

26  developing a process that makes it cool to report school crime

27  or violence, and/or conducting mock trials, and

28         WHEREAS, "Stop Day" will give every student in the

29  State of Florida an opportunity to evaluate this critical

30  issue and assess his or her role in preventing these

  1  unnecessary incidences of crime in order to break this vicious

  2  cycle of violence, NOW, THEREFORE,

  3

  4  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  5  Florida:

  6

  7         That the House of Representatives pauses in its

  8  deliberations to recognize Tuesday, April 11, 2000, as "Stop

  9  Day" in the Florida Legislature.
