  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution in recognition of Dan Marino and

  3         designating April 13, 2000, as "Dan Marino Day"

  4         in Florida.

  5

  6         WHEREAS, Daniel Constantine Marino, Jr., was born in

  7  Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 15, 1961, and

  8         WHEREAS, after attending Central Catholic High School

  9  in Pittsburgh, Dan Marino attended the University of

10  Pittsburgh, where he was the quarterback for the Pitt Panthers

11  from 1979 to 1982, and

12         WHEREAS, during his college career, Dan Marino led the

13  Panthers to three consecutive 11-1 seasons in his first three

14  years as quarterback and a 9-3 season as a senior, and

15  finished fourth in balloting for the Heisman Trophy during his

16  junior year, and

17         WHEREAS, selected by the Miami Dolphins as the 27th

18  pick in the first round of the NFL draft of 1983, Dan Marino

19  embarked upon a 17-year career with the Dolphins in which he

20  set numerous NFL records that stand to this day and, in the

21  opinions of many football analysts, may never be broken, and

22         WHEREAS, most notable among his more than 20 NFL

23  records are his single-season records of 48 touchdowns and

24  5,084 yards in 1984, and

25         WHEREAS, Dan Marino also holds NFL records for most

26  career touchdowns, total yards, passing attempts, and passing

27  completions, and

28         WHEREAS, Dan Marino's career passing statistics over

29  242 games are 4,967 completions out of 8,358 attempts for

30  61,361 yards and 420 touchdowns, for a quarterback rating of

31  86.4, and

  1         WHEREAS, Dan Marino is the only rookie quarterback to

  2  be named a starter in the Pro Bowl, and

  3         WHEREAS, Dan Marino also has the distinction of having

  4  led the Dolphins to 36 fourth-quarter come-from-behind

  5  victories, and

  6         WHEREAS, remarkably, the accomplishments of Dan Marino

  7  and the Miami Dolphins during Marino's 17-year career as the

  8  Dolphins' quarterback were reached with only one Dolphin

  9  running back exceeding the 1,000-yard season rushing mark, and

10         WHEREAS, aside from his achievements on the football

11  field, Dan Marino established the Dan Marino Foundation, which

12  supports many local charities, sponsors an annual golf

13  tournament to benefit the foundation, and helped create the

14  Children's Hospital Dan Marino Center in Weston, Florida, and

15         WHEREAS, it is fitting and appropriate that the House

16  of Representatives of the State of Florida honor Dan Marino

17  for his illustrious career as quarterback of the Miami

18  Dolphins and for the contributions he has made and the

19  recognition he has brought to the State of Florida, NOW,

20  THEREFORE,

22  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

23  Florida:

25         That the House of Representatives hereby honors Dan

26  Marino for one of the greatest careers in the history of

27  professional football and designates April 13, 2000, as "Dan

28  Marino Day" in the State of Florida.

29         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

30  be presented to Dan Marino as a tangible token of the

31  sentiments expressed herein.
