  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing Indian River Community

  3         College.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, during the 40 years since its inception in

  6  1960, Indian River Community College has evolved from a

  7  fledgling institution housed in a single building in Fort

  8  Pierce to become the dominant educational, technical, and

  9  cultural center of the Treasure Coast, serving more than

10  45,000 residents each year, and

11         WHEREAS, two years after Indian River Junior College

12  opened its doors, its president, Dr. Maxwell King, proudly

13  presided over the first graduating class of 28 local men and

14  women; the following year, the college moved to its present

15  Fort Pierce site on an 87-acre tract donated by the city; and,

16  following the 1965 merger with Lincoln Junior College, three

17  years later became Indian River Community College, and

18         WHEREAS, Dr. Herman Heise, the second president of the

19  college, oversaw the growth of programs in academics,

20  vocational training, student affairs, fine arts, and athletics

21  and, in 1974, the swimming and diving team embarked on what

22  has become the longest intercollegiate winning streak in any

23  sport in the entire nation, and

24         WHEREAS, between 1976 and 1987, in order to accommodate

25  the burgeoning growth of the institution, five additional

26  campuses were added: Mueller in Vero Beach, Chastain in

27  Stuart, Dixon-Hendry in Okeechobee, and Indian River Academy

28  and the Strelsa Schreiber Classroom Building, paving the way

29  for the 1992 opening, under the leadership of third president

30  Dr. Edwin Massey, of the St. Lucie West Campus and, in 1995,

31  the St. Lucie West Joint-Use Library, and

  1         WHEREAS, in keeping with its statewide and national

  2  reputation of excellence, Indian River Community College now

  3  offers distance learning through its "virtual campus" and,

  4  upon completion of current construction on the IRCC/FAU Joint

  5  Campus in St. Lucie West, will afford an unparalleled

  6  opportunity to residents of the Treasure Coast who wish to

  7  earn four-year degrees, NOW, THEREFORE,

  8

  9  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

10  Florida:

11

12         That the House of Representatives gratefully recognizes

13  the positive impact Indian River Community College has made on

14  the Treasure Coast area and the State of Florida and extends

15  its heartiest best wishes for its future endeavors.
