1 House Resolution
2 A resolution designating July 12, 2000, as
3 "Sigma Kappa Day" in recognition of the Sigma
4 Kappa Sorority as a leading national
5 contributor to efforts toward research,
6 treatment, and prevention of Alzheimer's
7 Disease.

9 WHEREAS, in 1954, the Sigma Kappa Sorority became the
10 first sorority to recognize the need for continued
11 comprehensive work on the study of aging and the needs of the
12 elderly population, and
13 WHEREAS, responding to an increasingly critical problem
14 facing older Americans, Sigma Kappa Sorority in 1984 added to
15 its gerontology program an emphasis on Alzheimer's Disease,
16 and during the intervening years has become one of the
17 nation's leading contributors to efforts aimed at research,
18 treatment, and prevention of this debilitating disease, and
19 WHEREAS, the sorority's Sigma Kappa Foundation awards
20 research and psychosocial grants in the areas of Alzheimer's
21 Disease and other dementia disorders that afflict the elderly,
22 and
23 WHEREAS, with both alumnae and collegiate chapters
24 largely responsible for providing funding for the grant
25 program, individual chapters hold special
26 fundraisers--collegians participating in the annual national
27 lollipop campaign, and both alumnae and collegians taking part
28 in the national Alzheimer's Memory Walks, and
29 WHEREAS, not content with limiting their energies to
30 fundraising drives, one alumnae chapter was instrumental in
31 preventing the closure of a nursing home in Atlanta, and many

1 chapters have adopted assisted living facilities or individual
2 patients whom they regularly visit, thus adding a more
3 personal touch to their benevolence, and
4 WHEREAS, through the dedicated involvement of its
5 numerous chapters across the nation, the Sigma Kappa Sorority
6 has touched the lives of countless individuals, making a
7 difference not only in those lives but in society at large,
8 NOW, THEREFORE,

10 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
11 Florida:

13 That the House of Representatives pauses in its
14 deliberations to pay tribute to each Sigma Kappa Sorority
15 Chapter and its members, and to the Sigma Kappa Foundation,
16 for the outstanding work they are doing on behalf of the
17 victims of Alzheimer's Disease and in support of efforts
18 toward better understanding, treatment, and prevention of the
19 disease.
20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the House of
21 Representatives of the State of Florida designates July 12,
22 2000, as "Sigma Kappa Day" in Florida in recognition of the
23 sorority's outstanding service.
