1 House Resolution
2 A resolution honoring the life of Mr. Leon
3 Watts.

5 WHEREAS, Leon Watts was born on August 7, 1920, to
6 Henry and Elizabeth Watts in Richmond Kentucky, and
7 WHEREAS, Leon Watts attended Richmond High School,
8 where he was a black all-American basketball player, received
9 a Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Arts from Florida
10 Agricultural and Mechanical University, and a Master of Arts
11 in Physical Education from the University of Michigan, and
12 WHEREAS, Leon Watts taught at schools in Spartanburg,
13 South Carolina, and in Williston and Martin and Broward
14 Counties, Florida, at Washington Junior College, and at
15 Broward Community College where he was the first black faculty
16 member when the college integrated in 1962, and
17 WHEREAS, Leon Watts served on the Broward County
18 Housing Authority, the Broward County Housing Finance
19 Authority, the District Board of Trustees of Broward Community
20 College where he was vice-chairman and chairman, the Health
21 Planning Council, the Mental Health Board, the Community
22 Development Council, the National Safety Council, the Area
23 Agency on Aging, the Democratic Executive Committee, and the
24 Trustee Board of the First Baptist Church of Piney Grove, and
25 WHEREAS, Leon Watts, a founding member of the National
26 Varsity F Club of Florida A & M University, was the Broward
27 County 1970 Basketball Coach of the Year, and was inducted
28 into the FLorida A & M University Sports Hall of Fame in 1979,

2 Florida:

4 That the Florida House of Representative honors the
5 life of Leon Watts and recognizes his contributions and
6 achievements in teaching, coaching, and community service in
7 Florida.
