  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution commending the Woman Wise Alliance

  3         for its efforts to educate women about health

  4         risks after menopause.

  5

  6         WHEREAS, women after menopause lose estrogen, which

  7  puts them at higher risk of diseases such as osteoporosis,

  8  heart disease, breast cancer, and depression, and

  9         WHEREAS, as a result of osteoporosis, the most common

10  disease in a woman past menopause, a woman can lose up to

11  one-third of her spinal bone mass during the six years after

12  menopause, and forty percent of women over age 50 will develop

13  an osteoporotic fracture, and

14         WHEREAS, coronary heart disease kills more women than

15  men each year, and one in two women will eventually die of

16  heart disease or stroke, and

17         WHEREAS, for women between ages 35 to 74, the death

18  rate from heart attack for black women is more than thirty

19  percent higher than that for white women, and

20         WHEREAS, one in every eight women will develop breast

21  cancer during her lifetime and, after age 50, the risk

22  increases dramatically, with women in their 60's twice as

23  likely to get breast cancer as women in their 40's, and

24         WHEREAS, a breast cancer survivor is ten times more

25  likely to get osteoporosis because she is unable to take

26  estrogen, and

27         WHEREAS, about seven million women in the United States

28  are clinically depressed, elderly women are more prone to

29  depression than elderly men, and only one in three women with

30  depression will ever seek care, and

  1         WHEREAS, the years after menopause are the time when

  2  women can do the most to prevent, identify, and treat

  3  osteoporosis, heart disease, breast cancer, and depression,

  4  and

  5         WHEREAS, the Woman Wise Alliance is a nonprofit, public

  6  education network of women's organizations, health advocacy

  7  groups, professional organizations, and other groups committed

  8  to women's health after menopause, and its goal, through

  9  education and advocacy, is to educate women about the health

10  risks after menopause and to motivate them to seek appropriate

11  health counsel, preventive screenings, and treatments to

12  ensure that women have access to the health care they need,

13  NOW, THEREFORE,

15  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

16  Florida:

17

18         That the Woman Wise Alliance be commended for its

19  efforts to help women understand their health risks and have

20  access to all prevention and treatment options, and to

21  encourage them to take action by talking with their health

22  care providers about options that build strong bones, protect

23  the heart, reduce risk of cancer, and address clinical

24  depression.
