  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution designating June 21-24, 2000, as

  3         "U.S. Transplant Games 2000 Days."

  4

  5         WHEREAS, the success of the 2000 U.S. Transplant Games

  6  depends largely on the commitment made by the Florida Chapter

  7  of the National Kidney Foundation, Florida's organ and tissue

  8  procurement organizations, the Minority Organ Tissue

  9  Transplant Education Program, the Transplant Recipients

10  International Organization, the Marrow Donor Program, and the

11  Florida Coalition on Donation, and

12         WHEREAS, the National Kidney Foundation is the world's

13  largest organization promoting organ and tissue donation, and

14  the leader in organ donation programs for transplant

15  recipients, donor families, and the professionals who care for

16  them, and

17         WHEREAS, the State of Florida Organ and Tissue Donor

18  Education Program, the Department of Highway Safety and Motor

19  Vehicles, and the Department of Education are charged by the

20  Legislature to work together to help increase the availability

21  of organ and tissue donors, and

22         WHEREAS, it is possible to transplant many different

23  organs and tissues, including corneas, heart, liver, kidneys,

24  pancreas, lungs, intestine, bone marrow, and bone and

25  cartilage, and

26         WHEREAS, of the 68,805 people in the United States

27  waiting for a live-saving transplant, almost two-thirds of

28  those need a kidney, and

29         WHEREAS, the U.S. Transplant Games 2000 is a national

30  event showcasing the success of transplantation and the

  1  commitment of donor families, in addition to calling attention

  2  to the shortage of organ and tissue donors worldwide, and

  3         WHEREAS, Floridians are a caring and giving people, and

  4  one of the most meaningful and unselfish gifts that one human

  5  being can give another is the "gift of life," NOW, THEREFORE,

  6

  7  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  8  Florida:

  9

10         That June 21-24, 2000, is hereby designated as "U.S.

11  Transplant Games 2000 Days."

12         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the House of

13  Representatives of the State of Florida encourages all

14  Floridians to have family discussions about organ and tissue

15  donation and the gift of life.
