  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution honoring the staff of WEDR 99

  3         JAMZ's continuing dedication to the betterment

  4         of their community.

  5

  6         WHEREAS, since 1982, when WEDR led the community in

  7  calling for the release of several detained Haitian refugees,

  8  99 JAMZ has provided African-Americans and community leaders

  9  in Miami with both a forum and a voice to express concerns

10  that are important to them, and

11         WHEREAS, 99 JAMZ's never-ending commitment to the

12  community it serves has helped to secure its place as the

13  number one station in its Miami-Fort Lauderdale market and to

14  become the first Black-formatted radio station in the United

15  States to be sold for the phenomenal price of $65 million, and

16         WHEREAS, under the leadership of Vice President and

17  General Manager Jerry Rushin, WEDR has used its high stature

18  and strong listener base to further its commitment to the

19  betterment of its community, such as the establishment of the

20  99 JAMZ Jocks Reading Club, which encourages youth and adults

21  alike to learn to read, and

22         WHEREAS, in its commitment to service, 99 JAMZ, through

23  a partnership with the Miami-Dade firefighters, has succeeded

24  in brightening the holidays in Miami by collecting over 3,000

25  toys which were distributed to both families screened by the

26  Department of Children and Families and participants in the

27  department's Foster Care Program, as well as to the Miami-Dade

28  community at large at the 99 JAMZ Winter Wonderland, NOW,

29  THEREFORE,

  1  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  2  Florida:

  3

  4         That the members of the House of Representatives pause

  5  in their deliberations to commend Jerry Rushin and the staff

  6  at WEDR 99 JAMZ for their ongoing efforts to serve and to

  7  better their community.

  8         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

  9  be presented to the staff of WEDR 99 JAMZ as a tangible token

10  of the sentiments expressed herein.
