1 House Resolution
2 A resolution urging the United States Congress
3 and the President of the United States to
4 support Senate Bill 2058, which extends filing
5 deadlines for applications for adjustment of
6 resident status of Haitian and other nationals.

8 WHEREAS, the State of Florida is home to a vibrant and
9 involved community of Haitian-Americans, and
10 WHEREAS, the Haitian-Americans who reside in Florida
11 are concerned about the welfare and safety of Haitian migrants
12 who seek to remain in or to enter the United States, and
13 WHEREAS, Congress passed the Haitian Refugee
14 Immigration Fairness Act of 1998, an amnesty program for
15 Haitians who fled persecution in their homeland, designed to
16 expedite the process for making these immigrants legal
17 residents of the United States, and
18 WHEREAS, the United States Immigration and
19 Naturalization Service released final application guidelines
20 for Haitian applicants only 7 days prior to expiration of the
21 law, and
22 WHEREAS, United States Senators Bob Graham and Connie
23 Mack of Florida have introduced legislation that would extend
24 the application deadline for one year, NOW, THEREFORE,

26 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
27 Florida:

29 That the United States Congress is urged to hear and
30 pass, and the President of the United States is urged to
31 support and sign, Senate Bill 2058, which extends the filing

1 deadlines for applications for adjustment of resident status
2 for Haitian and other nationals.
3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the President of the United
4 States is urged to issue a protective order preventing Haitian
5 nationals who are eligible for legal resident status under
6 Senate Bill 2058 from being deported while Senate Bill 2058 is
7 pending in the 106th Congress.
8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution
9 be sent to the President of the United States, the President
10 of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States
11 House of Representatives, and to each member of the Florida
12 delegation to the United States Congress.
