  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution commending John W. Fitzwater for

  3         his service to the community of Gainesville.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, John W. Fitzwater has tirelessly worked for

  6  the betterment of the people of Gainesville and has strived to

  7  help those less fortunate than himself, devoting himself to

  8  the community and achieving major goals in the areas of

  9  business and education, and

10         WHEREAS, as Chairman of the Board of the Research-Based

11  Model Partnership Education Program to Self-Empower African

12  American Children for School Success, which helps minority

13  children strive for success in school and life, Mr. Fitzwater

14  has helped to elevate and give hope to those who most need

15  hope, and in so doing he has made a positive difference in the

16  lives of thousands of children, and

17         WHEREAS, Mr. Fitzwater was one of the founders of FOCUS

18  On Leadership, which helps through mentoring and guidance to

19  train African American citizens for future roles as leaders in

20  the community, state, and nation, giving generously of his

21  time and financial support, and

22         WHEREAS, as Campaign Chair of the United Way of Alachua

23  County Mr. Fitzwater helped the organization surpass the 1999

24  goal and raised a record-setting $2,811,499, and

25         WHEREAS, during his 13 years as publisher of The

26  Gainesville Sun, John Fitzwater has always been accessible to

27  the people of Gainesville, and through his leadership of

28  numerous programs he has had a tremendous impact on shaping

29  the community and helping those who are less fortunate, NOW,

30  THEREFORE,

  4         That the House of Representatives of the State of

  5  Florida hereby commends John W. Fitzwater for his years of

  6  tireless service to the community of Gainesville and wishes

  7  him well in his future endeavors.
