  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution honoring the accomplishments of

  3         Eldrick "Tiger" Woods.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, since his entry into the world of professional

  6  golf in 1996, Tiger Woods has won 22 tournaments, 16 of those

  7  tournaments on the PGA Tour, including the 1999 PGA

  8  Championship and the 1997 Masters Tournament, and

  9         WHEREAS, Tiger Woods had one of the greatest seasons in

10  PGA Tour history in 1999, earning a tour record of $6,616,585,

11  nearly $3 million more than his nearest competitor, and

12         WHEREAS, in 1999, Tiger Woods was the first golfer to

13  have eight PGA Tour victories in one year since Johnny Miller

14  won eight tournaments in 1974, a total that has been equaled

15  only six times and exceeded only five times, and

16         WHEREAS, Tiger Woods won four consecutive PGA Tour

17  events to end 1999, and started 2000 with two more consecutive

18  PGA Tour victories in the Mercedes Championships and the

19  Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, tying Ben Hogan's record of six

20  wins in a row in 1948 and establishing one of the longest

21  winning streaks in professional golf history, second only to

22  Byron Nelson's 11 consecutive wins in 1945, and

23         WHEREAS, Tiger Woods had 16 top-ten finishes in 21

24  starts on the 1999 PGA Tour and missed no 36-hole cuts,

25  extending his streak to 39 consecutive events, and

26         WHEREAS, in addition to the 1999 PGA Championship,

27  Tiger Woods won the Buick Invitational, the Memorial

28  Tournament, the Motorola Western Open, the WGC NEC

29  Invitational, the National Car Rental Classic, the Tour

30  Championship, and the WGC American Express Championship on the

31  PGA Tour, won the Deutsche Bank-SAP Open on the PGA European

  1  Tour, and, with Mark O'Meara, won the World Cup individual

  2  team title, and

  3         WHEREAS, Tiger Woods has set records for the most

  4  victories for a golfer of his age and number of years as a

  5  professional with 21 professional victories at age 23, and

  6         WHEREAS, Tiger Woods had 11 victories overall in 1999,

  7  the most for any professional golfer of his age in one year

  8  since Horton Smith had eight PGA Tour victories in 1929 at age

  9  21, and

10         WHEREAS, Tiger Woods' two professional major

11  championships and three U.S. Amateur titles brought his total

12  to five major championships at age 23, the same total as Jack

13  Nicklaus at that age, and

14         WHEREAS, including an eleventh victory in the PGA Grand

15  Slam, Tiger Woods' 1999 worldwide earnings were $7,681,625,

16  and his career earnings to date are $14,641,832, including

17  $11,837,129 on the PGA Tour, and

18         WHEREAS, among the honors received by Tiger Woods in

19  1999 were the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year, the

20  Jack Nicklaus Award for the Player of the Year as selected by

21  the PGA Tour, and player of the year designation by PGA of

22  America and the Golf Writers Association of America, and

23         WHEREAS, Tiger Woods' adjusted scoring average in 1999

24  of 68.43 strokes was the lowest scoring average on record and

25  earned Tiger Woods the Byron Nelson Award on the PGA Tour and

26  the Vardon Trophy from the PGA of America, and

27         WHEREAS, the Tiger Woods Foundation supports the First

28  Tee Program to make golf accessible and affordable for

29  children, especially minority and inner city children, with

30  programs being developed in Jacksonville, Hollywood, and Palm

  1  Beach, and in St. Johns County, with the intent to expand the

  2  First Tee Program across the state, and

  3         WHEREAS, it is fitting and appropriate that the House

  4  of Representatives recognize Eldrick "Tiger" Woods for his

  5  numerous outstanding accomplishments, NOW, THEREFORE,

  6

  7  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  8  Florida:

  9

10         That the House of Representatives of the State of

11  Florida hereby applauds Eldrick "Tiger" Woods for his

12  inspirational accomplishments in the world of professional

13  sports and recognizes him as the preeminent professional

14  golfer in the world today and an inspiring standard for

15  athletes, minorities, and the youth of the world.

16         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

17  be presented to Tiger Woods as a tangible token of the

18  sentiments expressed herein.
