1 House Resolution
2 A resolution honoring the recipients of the
3 African American Achievers awards for the year
4 2000.

6 WHEREAS, selected by an independent panel of
7 distinguished African Americans from Miami-Dade, Broward, and
8 Palm Beach Counties, eight community leaders from among more
9 than 150 nominees are recipients of this year's African
10 American Achievers awards for their outstanding contributions
11 toward enriching the lives of South Floridians, and
12 WHEREAS, now in its eighth year, the awards program was
13 created by JM Family Enterprises and its subsidiary, Southeast
14 Toyota Distributors, to recognize those who have made
15 especially positive impacts in the community by their selfless
16 commitment to others, and
17 WHEREAS, the 2000 South Florida African American
18 Achievers, and the category which each represents, are as
19 follows: Dawn Gibson-Brehon, Duncan Theatre Manager - The
20 Arts; Dr. Minnie Lowe-Joyner, Founder of the Dr. M. L.
21 Mitchell Community School - Education; Ted Johnson,
22 President/General Manager of Fort Lauderdale Mitsubishi -
23 Entrepreneurism; Mary B. Hooks, Secretary of Labor and
24 Employment Security - Government; Irma Hunter Wesley,
25 Executive Director of Fort Lauderdale Child Development
26 Center, Inc. - Health and Family Services; Irvin Minney,
27 Project Director of Community Outreach for the Museum of
28 Discovery and Science - Nonprofit Organizations; Sandrell
29 Rivers, Areawide Arts Supervisor for Miami-Dade Metro Parks -
30 The Professions; and Leslie Bailey, student at Plantation High
31 School - Jerome Edmond Gray Youth Achiever, NOW, THEREFORE,

1 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
2 Florida:

4 That the House of Representatives pauses in its
5 deliberations to congratulate the worthy recipients of the
6 2000 South Florida African American Achievers awards and to
7 express its sincere gratitude for the commonly held spirit of
8 selflessness that resulted in the service for which each is
9 recognized.
10 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution
11 be presented to each award recipient as a tangible token of
12 the sentiments expressed herein.
