  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution designating the Town of Century as

  3         "Florida's Millennium City."

  4

  5         WHEREAS, Florida's northernmost city, and the

  6  northwestern gate to the Sunshine State, the Town of Century

  7  was founded in 1901 by the Alger-Sullivan Lumber Company after

  8  the company had established a sawmill in the area, and

  9         WHEREAS, to celebrate and to usher in the new

10  millennium, a two-day celebration was held, which featured an

11  array of entertainment for all ages, culminating in a

12  fireworks show at midnight on December 31, 1999, and the

13  burying of a time capsule on January 1, 2000, not to be opened

14  until the year 2025, and

15         WHEREAS, to further emphasize this unique period in its

16  history, Century has won the approval of the United States

17  Postal Service for the issuance of two pictorial postage

18  cancellation stamps, each bearing the Century Millennium

19  Celebration Committee's logo, designed by Deven Walther, a

20  student from Jay, Florida, and the respective dates of

21  December 31, 1999, and January 1, 2000, and

22         WHEREAS, the Century Millennium Celebration Committee

23  has applied for the national designation of "Millennium

24  Community," which would be conferred by a noncompetitive

25  program of the same name designed to recognize the commitment

26  of communities across the nation to bring citizens together

27  around meaningful millennium projects consistent with the

28  national theme, "Honor the Past - Imagine the Future," and

29         WHEREAS, it was most appropriate as the new century

30  dawned to celebrate the achievements and growth of the Town of

31  Century and its citizens, NOW, THEREFORE,

  1  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  2  Florida:

  4         That the House of Representatives pauses in its

  5  deliberations to recognize the Town of Century, Florida, and

  6  to designate the town as "Florida's Millennium City."
