14         Senate Amendment (with title amendment) 

15         On page 35, between lines 26 and 27,

16

17  insert:

18         Section 22.  Task Force on Capital Cases.--

19         (1)  The Governor shall appoint a 15 member Task Force

20  on Capital Cases:

21         (2)  Members of the task force are entitled to

22  reimbursement for per diem and travel expenses in accordance

23  with section 112.061, Florida Statutes.

24         (3)  The members of the task force shall be appointed

25  by January 14, 2000. The terms of the members of the task

26  force shall expire and the task force shall be disbanded upon

27  submittal of its report to the the Governor, the State Supreme

28  Court, the President of the Senate, and the Speaker of the

29  House of Representatives.

30         (4)  The staff of the Executive Office of the Governor

31  shall provide staff support for the task force.

 1         (5)  The task force shall study evidence of

 2  discrimination, if any, in the sentencing of defendants in

 3  capital cases, including consideration of race, ethnicity,

 4  gender, and the possible mental retardation of the defendant.

 5  The task force shall submit its report by March 1, 2000.
