  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to the Partnership for Quality

  3         Medical and Dental Education; establishing the

  4         Partnership for Quality Medical and Dental

  5         Education pilot project between Florida

  6         Agricultural and Mechanical University, the

  7         University of Florida, and the University of

  8         South Florida to increase the participation of

  9         underrepresented groups in the fields of

10         medical and dental education; providing program

11         requirements; providing an effective date.

13  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

14  

15         Section 1.  Partnership for Quality Medical and Dental

16  Education pilot project.--For the purpose of increasing the

17  participation of underrepresented groups, such as economically

18  disadvantaged youth and minority students, in the fields of

19  medical and dental education, a partnership pilot project is

20  hereby created between the undergraduate science programs at

21  Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and the

22  graduate medical and dental programs at the University of

23  Florida and the University of South Florida. The project shall

24  provide the following for Florida Agricultural and Mechanical

25  University students participating in the pilot project:

26         (1)  Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University

27  will be responsible for providing students enrolled in the

28  first 2 years of the program with education in the basic

29  sciences that corresponds with those courses required of

30  students enrolled in the medical and dental programs at the

31  University of Florida and the University of South Florida.

  1         (2)  The University of Florida and the University of

  2  South Florida will be responsible for providing students who

  3  have completed the first 2 years of the program with 2 years

  4  of intensive clinical training.

  5         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2001.
