2 An act relating to the Aftercare Pilot Program;
3 requiring the Department of Education to
4 conduct an Aftercare Pilot Program to provide
5 homework assistance and free dinner after
6 school to certain children in schools selected
7 for participation; providing program
8 requirements; identifying a source of funds;
9 requiring a report to the Legislature;
10 providing an effective date.

12 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

14 Section 1. During the 2001-2002 school year, the
15 Department of Education shall conduct an Aftercare Pilot
16 Program that meets the following requirements:
17 (1) The department shall select one elementary school
18 in an urban area, one elementary school in a rural area, and
19 one elementary school in a suburban area for participation in
20 the pilot program. Schools selected for participation must
21 have been designated as performance grade category "C" or
22 below, according to s. 229.57, Florida Statutes, during the
23 previous school year.
24 (2) In schools selected for participation in the pilot
25 program, children identified by the school administration as
26 being eligible for participation shall be provided homework
27 assistance and dinner after school, at no cost to the student
28 or his or her parents, 3 days per week.
29 (3) Schools selected for participation in the pilot
30 program shall provide such services using funds allocated to

1 the school from the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund
2 according to s. 24.121, Florida Statutes.

4 The department shall report to the Legislature by January 1,
5 2003, regarding the effects of the pilot program on student
6 achievement.
7 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2001.
