  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing Breast Cancer

  3         Awareness Month.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer

  6  diagnosed in women in the nation, and

  7         WHEREAS, Florida ranks third in the nation for total

  8  number of new cases and deaths from breast cancer, and

  9         WHEREAS, all women are at risk for breast cancer and

10  the single most important risk factor is age, and

11         WHEREAS, the highest number of breast cancer cases in

12  Florida is mainly due to the concentration of older women in

13  the state, and

14         WHEREAS, 64 percent of all breast cancers occur in

15  women age 60 and older, and

16         WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that

17  there will be 12,500 new cases of invasive breast cancer in

18  Florida in the year 2001, and

19         WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society reported that 11,

20  844 women in Florida were diagnosed with breast cancer in

21  1999, and

22         WHEREAS, every 3 hours, one woman in Florida dies of

23  breast cancer, and a total of 2,600 will die from breast

24  cancer in the year 2001, and

25         WHEREAS, breast cancer is the second most common cause

26  of cancer death in white women but the leading cause of cancer

27  death among African-American women, and

28         WHEREAS, early detection through routine clinical and

29  mammography screening beginning at age 40 in compliance with

30  the American Cancer Society recommended breast cancer

  1  screening guidelines is the key to improving survival rates

  2  for breast cancer, and

  3         WHEREAS, almost 1 million women over the age of 40

  4  living in Florida have never had a mammogram, and

  5         WHEREAS, breast-cancer awareness programs, such as the

  6  American Cancer Society's Tell-A-Friend-Tuesday program, will

  7  promote early detection through regular screening in

  8  conjunction with the promotion of October as Breast Cancer

  9  Awareness Month, NOW, THEREFORE,

11  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

12

13         That the Florida Senate recognizes the month of October

14  as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Florida and urges all

15  women to understand the risks associated with breast cancer,

16  to take preventive steps to minimize those risks, and to

17  undergo early detection procedures, such as mammography and

18  compliance with the recommended breast cancer screening

19  guidelines.
