  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to road designations;

  3         designating a portion of State Road 16 as the

  4         Correctional Officers Memorial Highway;

  5         directing the Department of Transportation to

  6         erect suitable markers; providing an effective

  7         date.

  8

  9         WHEREAS, correctional officers in this state risk their

10  lives while protecting our citizenry, and

11         WHEREAS, residents of this state benefit greatly from

12  the services these officers provide in the 134 state prisons

13  in our state, and

14         WHEREAS, correctional officers were responsible for

15  managing more than 71,000 state inmates in the past year, and

16         WHEREAS, the Department of Corrections reports that 26

17  correctional officers have lost their lives in the line of

18  duty since 1928, and

19         WHEREAS, the Legislature and all Floridians recognize

20  the significant role these officers play in the maintenance of

21  law and order, and

22         WHEREAS, it is the intent of the Legislature to

23  recognize the contributions that correctional officers make to

24  our state by designating a portion of State Road 16 in their

25  honor, NOW, THEREFORE,

27  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

29         Section 1.  Correctional Officers Memorial Highway

30  designated.--

  1         (1)  That portion of State Road 16 from the

  2  northwestern Starke City limits in Bradford County to State

  3  Road 121 in Union County is hereby designated as the

  4  "Correctional Officers Memorial Highway."

  5         (2)  The Department of Transportation is directed to

  6  erect suitable markers designating the Correctional Officers

  7  Memorial Highway as described in subsection (1).

  8         Section 2.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

  9  law.
