  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act promoting drug-free workplaces; amending

  3         s. 440.101, F.S.; expressing legislative intent

  4         to promote such workplaces; providing an

  5         effective date.

  7  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

  8

  9         Section 1.  Subsection (1) of section 440.101, Florida

10  Statutes, is amended to read:

11         440.101  Legislative intent; drug-free workplaces.--

12         (1)  It is the intent of the Legislature to promote

13  drug-free workplaces in order that employers in the state be

14  afforded the opportunity to maximize their levels of

15  productivity, enhance their competitive positions in the

16  marketplace, and reach their desired levels of success without

17  experiencing the costs, delays, and tragedies associated with

18  work-related accidents resulting from drug abuse by employees.

19  It is further the intent of the Legislature that drug abuse be

20  discouraged and that employees who choose to engage in drug

21  abuse face the risk of unemployment and the forfeiture of

22  workers' compensation benefits. It is also the intent of the

23  Legislature to promote drug-free workplaces in order to

24  provide safe working environments.

25         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2001.
