2 A resolution honoring Kids Voting Broward, Inc.

4 WHEREAS, voter apathy is rampant in the United States
5 where, on average, fifty percent of eligible citizens do not
6 vote in presidential elections, and less than fifty percent of
7 adults 18 to 24 years of age are even registered to vote, and
8 WHEREAS, Kids Voting Broward, Inc., is a nonprofit,
9 nonpartisan organization with the goals of increasing adult
10 voter turnout, generating better-informed voters, and
11 instilling a lifelong habit of voting among tomorrow's voters,
12 and
13 WHEREAS, the Kids Voting curriculum helps students
14 discover the power and value of voting through prescribed
15 activities that aid in the development of skills and concepts
16 crucial to living in a democratic society, and
17 WHEREAS, in national studies, Kids Voting has been
18 proven to be a successful program, with ninety-nine percent of
19 teachers responding that their students know more about
20 elections, eighty-one percent of educators noting an increase
21 in parental involvement, and a measurable increase in voter
22 turnout of five percent in communities in which the Kids
23 Voting program has been implemented, and
24 WHEREAS, Election Day 2000 was a great success for Kids
25 Voting Broward, Inc., as 91,000 local students in kindergarten
26 through high school gained hands-on voting experience and a
27 record-breaking sixty percent of adults surveyed responded
28 that they were motivated to go to the polls and vote by their
29 children's desire to participate in the program, NOW,
30 THEREFORE,

1 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

3 That the Senate pauses in its deliberations to commend
4 Kids Voting Broward, Inc., for the invaluable service it
5 provides to its community in promoting civic-mindedness in
6 Florida's youth while increasing participation in our
7 electoral process.
