2 A resolution commemorating the life of Dale
3 Earnhardt.

5 WHEREAS, Dale Earnhardt was born on April 29, 1951, in
6 Kanapolis, North Carolina and died on February 18, 2001, in
7 Daytona, Florida, and
8 WHEREAS, Dale Earnhardt, during his racing career of
9 639 starts, 74 wins, 268 top-five finishes, and 402 top-ten
10 finishes, earned the nickname, "The Intimidator" because of
11 his aggressive driving style and unrelenting will to reach
12 victory lane, and
13 WHEREAS, Dale Earnhardt was named Rookie of the Year in
14 1979, his first year of NASCAR racing, won the NASCAR Winston
15 Cup Championship the following year, and ultimately won seven
16 Winston Cup Championships, tying him with Richard Petty for
17 the most championships, and
18 WHEREAS, Dale Earnhardt was the all-time NASCAR money
19 winner with over $35.5 million in career winnings, the only
20 six-time winner of the Busch Clash, the only three-time winner
21 of the Winston All Star Race, the five-time NMPA Driver of the
22 Year, the four-time winner of the IROC title, twice named
23 American Driver of the Year, and the first American driver to
24 receive the Autosports Gregor Grant Award, and
25 WHEREAS, Dale Earnhardt, despite completing all 500
26 miles of the Daytona 500 a record 14 times, more than any
27 other driver, was denied victory in that race for 19 years,
28 and
29 WHEREAS, Dale Earnhardt finally won the Daytona 500 in
30 1998 on his 20th attempt, and

1 WHEREAS, Dale Earnhardt was killed in a tragic accident
2 on the last lap of the Daytona 500 in 2001, and
3 WHEREAS, Dale Earnhardt's success both on the racetrack
4 and in life was a living example of the philosophy of doing
5 what you love and doing it better than anyone else, and
6 WHEREAS, Dale Earnhardt's untimely death was a loss to
7 his family, his associates, his fans, and the public, NOW,
8 THEREFORE,

10 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
11
12 That it is fitting that this legislative body pause in
13 its deliberations to pay its respects to Dale Earnhardt and
14 extend its condolences to his family and record this
15 testimonial of esteem and bereavement.
16 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
17 signed by the President of the Senate, with the Seal of the
18 Florida Senate affixed, be transmitted to Mrs. Teresa
19 Earnhardt as a tangible and lasting token of the respect and
20 sentiments of the members of the Florida Senate.
