1 Senate Resolution No. ____
2 A resolution honoring the Florida 4-H Youth
3 Development Program for serving the needs of
4 the young people of our state.

6 WHEREAS, the Florida 4-H Youth Development Program at
7 the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural
8 Sciences exists to develop young people ages five through
9 eighteen, and
10 WHEREAS, the 4-H youth development program has served
11 young people in our state since 1909 and will celebrate its
12 national centennial in 2002, and
13 WHEREAS, the 4-H program has molded itself to meet the
14 need of our citizens by focusing on developing rural,
15 suburban, and urban youth, and
16 WHEREAS, the 4-H program has taught youth using the
17 research and knowledge base of our state's land grant
18 institutions, the University of Florida, and Florida A&M
19 University, and has broadened its program areas to encompass
20 not only agriculture and animal science, but also public
21 speaking, computers, wildlife, forestry, and many other topics
22 of interest to today's young people, and
23 WHEREAS, through "learning by doing" experiences young
24 people in the 4-H program learn through hands-on instruction
25 about the world around them and with the guidance of caring
26 adult volunteer mentors and cooperative extension service
27 faculty and staff, and
28 WHEREAS, through the call to excellence epitomized in
29 its motto "to make the best better," 4-H inspires today's
30 young people to strive for their dreams and to not settle for
31 anything less than their best effort, and

1 WHEREAS, the 4-H program enables young people to grow
2 up and become participating citizens in a democracy and
3 defenders of democracy through outstanding and exemplary
4 programs such as the Florida 4-H Legislature and the
5 citizenship project, and
6 WHEREAS, the Florida 4-H program served 241,628 youth
7 in the Sunshine State last year alone through 4-H clubs,
8 special interest groups, camping, and school enrichment
9 educational programs, and
10 WHEREAS, 4-H young people across Florida devote
11 thousands of hours in service to their communities annually
12 through the 4-H'ers Helping the Hungry project and other
13 service activities, and
14 WHEREAS, positive youth development is violence
15 prevention, and the 4-H program teaches conflict resolution
16 skills to elementary schoolers through the Talking with TJ
17 program and is conducting a "Take a Stand Against Violence"
18 Pledge Card campaign to encourage youth and adults to stand up
19 to the violence in today's society, NOW, THEREFORE,
20
21 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
22
23 That the Florida 4-H Youth Development Program is
24 commended for its efforts on behalf of young people in the
25 state.
26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
27 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to the
28 Florida 4-H Youth Development Program as a tangible token of
29 the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
