1 Senate Resolution No. ____
2 A resolution recognizing Wednesday and
3 Thursday, April 4 and 5, 2001, as "Miami-Dade
4 County Days."

6 WHEREAS, Greater Miami-Dade County contains more than
7 72,000 businesses that employ over 1 million people and is the
8 site of 50 foreign consulates, 23 international trade offices,
9 and 31 bi-national Chambers of Commerce, and
10 WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County is a center of world
11 finance, with 150 financial institutions and foreign agencies
12 within its boundaries, and
13 WHEREAS, the film and TV industry has made Miami-Dade
14 County one of the largest production centers in the nation,
15 and last year the economic impact of this industry was
16 estimated at $2.5 billion, and
17 WHEREAS, agriculture continues to provide over $800
18 million in economic activity, and the industry has diversified
19 such that Miami-Dade County is one of the largest producers in
20 the United States of tropical fruits, ornamental plants, and
21 fish, and
22 WHEREAS, manufacturing is also a key industry in
23 Miami-Dade County, with nearly 2,700 companies that employ
24 approximately 68,100 individuals, and
25 WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County is experiencing a cultural
26 boom in world-class entertainment and cultural activities,
27 which is evidenced by the more than 1,000 nonprofit cultural
28 organizations offering dance, theater, music and visual arts,
29 and festivals and special events and by the development of a
30 state-of-the-art performing arts center, and

1 WHEREAS, the Miami-Dade community is a microcosm of the
2 world, in which 156 countries are represented, 60 languages
3 are spoken daily, and 15 languages are taught in the
4 community's schools, from which 69 direct, nonstop flights
5 take passengers to Latin America and the Caribbean, and at
6 which trade flourishes in the U.S. port located closest to
7 Africa, and
8 WHEREAS, today the tourism industry and the spillover
9 created by the industry creates jobs for one in every six
10 residents of the Miami-Dade area, NOW, THEREFORE,
11
12 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
13
14 That Wednesday and Thursday, April 4 and 5, 2001, are
15 recognized as "Miami-Dade County Days."
