  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to Broward County; authorizing

  3         each municipality within the county to adopt an

  4         ordinance regulating in public places the

  5         control and confinement of certain dogs;

  6         providing an effective date.

  8         WHEREAS, there have been numerous incidents of tourists

  9  being threatened by pit bulls on public beaches, and

10         WHEREAS, there were 115 pit bull and pit-mix bites in

11  Broward County in 1999 alone, and

12         WHEREAS, the number of attacks by these breeds far

13  exceeds those of other breeds, and

14         WHEREAS, there is concern for the safety of the

15  citizens of Broward County and its tourists in public places,

16  NOW, THEREFORE,

18  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

20         Section 1.  Each municipality located within the

21  geographic boundaries of Broward County, Florida, shall have

22  the option of adopting an ordinance regulating the control and

23  confinement of dogs in public places, with the authority for

24  such regulations to be specific to breed, including mixed

25  breeds.

26         Section 2.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

27  law.
