  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing "Wake-Up Wednesday"

  3         and encouraging people to participate in our

  4         democracy.

  5

  6         WHEREAS, the 18-24 year-old age group traditionally

  7  votes in lower percentages than any other age group, and

  8         WHEREAS, there are over 200,000 students in the Florida

  9  State University System, a large number of whom are in the

10  18-24 year-old age group, and

11         WHEREAS, pursuant to 20 United States Code

12  1094(a)(23)(A), institutions of higher education that

13  participate in federal financial aid programs are required to

14  request voter registration forms from their state and

15  distribute them to all students enrolled on their campus

16  before an upcoming federal election, and

17         WHEREAS, in the year 2000 the Student Government

18  Associations at all ten state universities, along with event

19  sponsors the Florida Student Association and the People for

20  the American Way Foundation's iVote2.com assisted in meeting

21  these requirements by organizing "Wake-Up Wednesday," a

22  unified voter-registration day, on September 13, 2000, and

23         WHEREAS, the goal of "Wake-Up Wednesday" was to

24  register and motivate thousands of young voters and encourage

25  them to make a life-long commitment to civic participation and

26  the electoral process, and

27         WHEREAS, on "Wake-Up Wednesday" an estimated 3,115

28  students became newly registered voters, NOW, THEREFORE,

30  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

  1         That the Florida Senate recognizes Wednesday, September

  2  19, 2001, as "Wake-Up Wednesday" in the state of Florida.

  3         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Florida Senate

  4  encourages all persons of voting age to register to vote,

  5  educate themselves on the issues, and participate in our

  6  democracy.
