  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing the Miami Edison

  3         Senior High School Girls' Basketball Team for

  4         winning the State Class 6A Championship on

  5         March 3, 2001.

  7         WHEREAS, Miami-Dade Public Schools have won only three

  8  of the previous 12 Final Four Championships since the girls'

  9  state championships began in 1976, and

10         WHEREAS, the Red Raiders Girls' Basketball Team of

11  Miami Edison Senior High School in 2001 made their fourth

12  Final Four appearance in the past 7 years, under the

13  leadership of Coach Denise Novak, and

14         WHEREAS, the Red Raiders Girls' Basketball Team of

15  Miami Edison Senior High School last won the state

16  championship in 1995, and were defeated in the final round of

17  the state championship only 1 year ago by the Bears of Winter

18  Springs Senior High School, and

19         WHEREAS, in a rematch of last year's finals, the Red

20  Raiders Girls' Basketball Team captured their second state

21  championship in a thrilling 65 to 56 victory over the Bears of

22  Winter Springs before 745 fans at the Lakeland Center, and

23         WHEREAS, the 2001 State Championship Miami Edison Red

24  Raiders are comprised of nine super seniors, including

25  Chanyekerson Ambroise, Rochelle Brown, Linda Christian,

26  Gerline Guillame, Carline Ofelus, Michelle Philogene, Lucila

27  Simon, Scholanda Dorrell, the team's leading scorer, and

28  Florance Williams, the tournament's Most Valuable Player, and

29  five talented underclass teammates, including Nicola Coley,

30  Nadage Dareus, Kalondra McKenzie, Earnesha Houston, and Sylvia

  1  Fowles, the only woman in Florida's History to attempt a dunk

  2  in a State Championship game, NOW, THEREFORE,

  4  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

  6         That the Florida Senate commends the Red Raiders Girls'

  7  Basketball Team of Miami Edison Senior High School for their

  8  relentless pursuit of excellence in winning the State Class 6A

  9  Championship.
