2 A resolution celebrating April 18, 2001, as
3 "University of Florida Day."

5 WHEREAS, the state's oldest land-grant university and
6 its largest university, the University of Florida was the
7 first Florida institution to achieve university status, is the
8 most comprehensive university in the state, and is one of the
9 three most academically diverse universities in the nation,
10 and
11 WHEREAS, the University of Florida is the state's only
12 member of the Association of American Universities, is the
13 only university with extension programs in every county of the
14 state plus the Seminole Tribe, has awarded more than 300,000
15 degrees, with an estimated 150,000 alumni currently living and
16 working in Florida, and is exceeded by only two other public
17 universities in the nation in the number of National Merit
18 Scholars to its credit, and
19 WHEREAS, the University of Florida's Health Science
20 Center is the most all-inclusive academic health center in the
21 Southeast, and, through its Institute of Food and Agricultural
22 Sciences, the university reaches a million and a half
23 participants throughout the state, thanks to more than 50,000
24 volunteers in the areas of urban horticulture, youth and
25 family development, nutrition education, and natural resources
26 enhancement, and
27 WHEREAS, the University of Florida has just concluded a
28 five-year "It's Performance that Counts" campaign that raised
29 more than $850 million toward the furtherance of academic
30 excellence, has been awarded $339 million in funding for
31 sponsored research, and has a total annual impact on the state

1 of almost $3.2 billion, more than six times the $511 million
2 comprising the state's investment in the university, NOW
3 THEREFORE,

5 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
6
7 That the Florida Senate pauses in its deliberations to
8 recognize the University of Florida for its superlative
9 accomplishments in the State of Florida and to celebrate April
10 18, 2001, as "University of Florida Day."
