  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing Familial Dysautonomia

  3         as a serious genetic disease affecting certain

  4         residents of this state and recognizing June

  5         10, 2001, as Familial Dysautonomia Day.

  6         WHEREAS, Familial Dysautonomia is present from birth

  7  and slowly deteriorates the autonomic and sensory nerve cells,

  8  and all children with Familial Dysautonomia have the same

  9  basic problem, incomplete development of nerve cells, and

10         WHEREAS, some children also have secondary problems,

11  but the degree to which a particular child is affected will

12  vary, even within the same family, and a child may experience

13  all or only some of the secondary problems, such as feeding

14  problems, blood pressure fluctuation, inability to regulate

15  body temperature, inability to feel pain or feel hot or cold,

16  a lack of overflow tears, vomiting, poor growth, spinal

17  curvature, lung problems and chronic upper respiratory

18  infections, and learning disabilities, and

19         WHEREAS, 60 percent of those affected with Familial

20  Dysautonomia require tube feedings, and, despite advances in

21  medical treatment, only 50 percent of those affected with

22  Familial Dysautonomia will live to be only 30 years old, and

23         WHEREAS, the Familial Dysautonomia Gene Mutation has

24  been identified, and, now that testing will be available, this

25  knowledge of testing and education will help prevent further

26  suffering of children and parents, NOW, THEREFORE,

27  

28  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

29  

30         That the Florida Senate recognizes Familial

31  Dysautonomia as a serious genetic disease affecting certain
