  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing April 18, 2001, as

  3         "Florida's Great Northwest Day" in Tallahassee.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, Florida's extreme western tip was the location

  6  of North America's first European settlement, with Spanish

  7  colonists arriving in 1559, and

  8         WHEREAS, Florida's Great Northwest is home to Port St.

  9  Joe, Florida's first Constitution Convention site, and

10         WHEREAS, Florida's Great Northwest encompasses sixteen

11  counties across the Florida Panhandle, and over 13,000 square

12  miles of beautiful coastline, winding rivers, vast tracts of

13  forested land, and more than 100 freshwater springs, and

14         WHEREAS, Florida's Great Northwest is home to the

15  largest military landmass training installation in the world,

16  Eglin Air Force Base, and

17         WHEREAS, Florida's Great Northwest is home to Hurlburt

18  Field, home of the 16th Special Operations Wing, which is the

19  oldest and largest and most seasoned unit in the Air Force

20  Special Operations Command, and

21         WHEREAS, Florida's Great Northwest is home to the

22  Pensacola Naval Air Station, home of the Blue Angels, and

23         WHEREAS, Florida's Great Northwest is home to the

24  Tyndall Air Force Base, home of the 325th Fighter Wing, and

25         WHEREAS, Florida's Great Northwest is home to many

26  other military installations, including Duke Field, Whiting

27  Field, Coastal System Station, and the United States Coast

28  Guard, and

29         WHEREAS, Florida's Great Northwest is world-famous for

30  its emerald green waters, natural reefs, and beautiful white

31  sands, and

  1         WHEREAS, Florida's Great Northwest is one of the

  2  nation's most recognized fishing destinations, including the

  3  "World's Luckiest Fishing Village" in Destin, and

  4         WHEREAS, Florida's Great Northwest is home to

  5  Apalachicola Bay, one of the most productive bays in the

  6  country, and

  7         WHEREAS, Florida's Great Northwest is home to the

  8  invention of air conditioning in Franklin County nearly 150

  9  years ago by Dr. John Gorrie, and

10         WHEREAS, Florida's Great Northwest is the home of

11  Milton, which is considered by the Florida Legislature to be

12  Florida's Canoe Capitol, and

13         WHEREAS, Florida's Capital City, Tallahassee, is

14  located in the Great Northwest, among a mix of historical and

15  natural attractions, and

16         WHEREAS, Florida's Great Northwest is known for

17  Southern hospitality, gracious folks, and quaint towns, and

18         WHEREAS, Florida's Great Northwest offers exciting

19  events from wine festivals to seafood extravaganzas to ethnic

20  heritage happenings, NOW, THEREFORE,

22  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

23

24         That the Florida Senate recognizes April 18, 2001, as

25  "Florida's Great Northwest Day" in Tallahassee.
